In the window of Miller Cherry Exxon was a reader board that read “Ask me about the free gift.” I asked my boss what the gift was, thinking I was going to get some cool thing to say I worked there. What I got instead was the gospel of Jesus Christ. In ten minutes Ray explained to me what it really meant to follow Jesus and what that looked like. I responded flatly with “thanks for sharing that with me!” That was my normal sarcastic response when I didn’t really care what someone said.
Six months later, so Ray would shut up, I agreed to go to church. New Years Eve 1980…. That night I came to realize I had been playing games with a Holy and Just God- who honestly had no reason to put up with some kid game. As I sat in my room sobbing, I confessed my sin, and asked Jesus to forgive me and to be my God.
Standing before a Holy and Just God all you can really do is confess who you are and thank Him for what He has done. Grace is all about knowing there is nothing you can do to make it right with God, it all has to come from Him. In March of 1981, I surrendered to preach the Gospel.
